Point Loma Area Information

Point Loma is classic San Diego. The area just 10 minutes from downtown, surrounding by ocean, the San Diego Bay, and several military installations, is home to some of San Diego’s oldest homes. Stroll down Garrison Street and take in the views eastward back across Coronado, the Bay, and downtown San Diego. Or visit during Christmas time, when Garrison Street’s residents put one of the most spectacular residential light displays in town.

For over 20 years, Pete Middleton and the Pete Knows Team have served San Diego helping home buyers and homeowners to sell their homes. We are one of the top brokerages in town, and there is a reason people say “Pete Knows Point Loma”.

More on the Point Loma Area
A peninsula jutting into the sea, Point Loma is the site where San Diego was discovered in 1542. West of downtown San Diego, you'll find Point Loma, featuring picturesque marinas from which sport fishing excursions, whale watching tours and harbor cruises depart.  Originally home to some of San Diego's oldest residents, Point Loma grew from the Portuguese families that settled the area as fisherman in the early 1900's.  An annual Portuguese heritage festival with traditional food and dancing is still hosted here each year.

It encompasses at least five distinct districts. Up on The Point are beautiful, multi-million dollar mansions. Down by The Midway you'll find Kobey's Swap Meet, the city's largest weekend swap meet. On the Ocean Beach side, surf pounds the rugged coastline, while The Harbor side is a safe haven for yachts.

Top restaurants in Point Loma include Comodoro Ristorante Italiano, Bali Hai Restaurant with its Tahitian themed bar and fare, as well as Brigantine Seafood and the West Side Tap House gastropub.  Several restaurants in Point Loma unsurprisingly offer views of San Diego Bay, including Tom Hamm’s Lighthouse, Vessel Restaurant and Bar, and Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern.

Point Loma's fifth district is Liberty Station, the waterfront urban village in the redeveloped Naval Training Center that includes hotels, restaurants, shops, a waterfront park, the historic Sail Ho Golf Course and the NTC Promenade, home to over 48 museums, galleries, artist and design studios, dance companies and other organizations that showcase San Diego's creative community. In 2016, Liberty Station welcomed the the Liberty Public Market, a public market open 7 days a week that houses two dozen food stalls, a wine bar, craft brew tap, as well as a host of other local artisans selling home goods, clothing, and similar items. The market has been a hit with locals in the ever-expanding commercial offerings of Liberty Station. Local craft brew empire Stone Brewing has a World Bistro & Gardens area adjacent to the Public Market, with event space for weddings and business events or parties to go along with a full restaurant and dozens of beers on tap.

Near Liberty Station is the Liberty Station NTC Park, a formal naval training center with open fields, a trail, several playgrounds and picnic areas for families. The Loma Club golf course is also on the property, offering 9 holes, a driving area. The club has been open for over 100 years.

Point Loma is known locally as an excellent spot for tide pooling, where low tide brings a magnificent reveal of the underwater reef, exposing flowery anemones, crabs and a myriad of other sea creatures. San Diego's nautical history and stunning views of the bay and downtown skyline can be seen from Cabrillo National Monument, home of the Point Loma Lighthouse located in Point Loma.  Tourists flock to Cabrillo and the nearby cemetery for unmatched views out across the Pacific, and back down looking at the entire San Diego downtown area over to Coronado.
